Privacy Policy

Modern Field Service (“we”, “us”) publishes written reviews and comparisons of field service software at modernfieldservice.com. This policy explains what happens to your data when you read the site.

The short version: this is a static website with no accounts, no forms and no advertising network. The only data we collect is anonymous analytics about which articles get read.

Who operates this site

Modern Field Service is an independent publication. Reviews are published under a named byline; see our authors.

For any privacy question or request, including a request to see or delete anything we hold, contact us through the comments on our YouTube channel and we will respond.

What we collect

Nothing you type. There are no forms, no sign-up, no newsletter and no comments on this site. There is nowhere to enter your name, email address or payment details, and we do not ask for them.

Server logs. The site is hosted on Vercel. Like any web host, Vercel processes standard request data in order to serve pages and defend against abuse: your IP address, the page requested, the time of the request, your browser’s user-agent string and the referring page. We do not use these logs to identify individuals and we do not combine them with anything else. Vercel acts as our hosting processor; see the Vercel privacy notice for its own handling and retention periods.

Analytics. This site uses Google Analytics 4 to understand which articles are read and how people arrive. It records the pages you view, roughly how long you spend, the type of device and browser, an approximate location derived from your IP address, and the site or search that referred you. Google Analytics does not receive your name or email address, because we never collect them. Google anonymises IP addresses before storing them and we have not enabled any advertising, remarketing or user-ID features. Google acts as our analytics processor; see how Google uses data from sites that use its services.

Cookies

Analytics cookies. Google Analytics sets first-party cookies (named _ga and _ga_*) to tell repeat visits apart from new ones. They hold a randomly generated identifier, not anything that names you, and expire after two years.

These are the only cookies this site sets. There is no advertising network, no remarketing pixel and no cross-site tracking.

To opt out, use your browser’s cookie controls or install Google’s official opt-out add-on, which blocks Analytics across every site you visit. Browsers set to Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control are respected by Google’s own handling. Blocking analytics does not affect anything on this site — nothing here depends on it.

Two further things are worth naming precisely, because they are the only other routes by which a third party could receive anything about your visit:

  • YouTube videos. Some articles embed a companion video. These use a click-to-load facade: nothing is requested from YouTube or Google until you actually press play. Until you do, YouTube receives no request, sets no cookie, and does not know you were on the page. If you press play, YouTube’s own terms and cookies then apply.
  • Video thumbnails. Where an article references a video thumbnail, that image is served from YouTube’s image host. It is a plain image request and sets no cookie.

Articles link to software vendors’ own websites. Some outbound links carry a plain referrer parameter in the URL so we can tell that a visit originated here. That parameter contains no information about you — it identifies this website, not you.

Once you follow an outbound link you are on that company’s website, under its privacy policy rather than ours.

Your rights

We hold no account data and no marketing list, so there is usually nothing about you for us to retrieve, correct or delete. Analytics data reaches us only in aggregate — we cannot look up an individual reader in it, because nothing in it identifies you to us.

If you are in the UK, EEA or Switzerland you nonetheless have the right to ask what we hold about you, to have it corrected or erased, to object to or restrict its processing, and to complain to your data protection authority. If you are in California, you have the right to know what is collected and to request deletion; we do not sell or share personal information. Contact us using the route above and we will respond.

The most direct way to stop analytics collection entirely is the browser-level opt-out described under Cookies, which takes effect immediately and does not require asking us.

Children

This site is written for people who run field service businesses. It is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes materially we will update the date at the top and describe what changed.
